A Taxus mairei elnevezésű növényfaj 2,5 millió éve él a Földön. Kínában az államilag szigorúan védett fajok közé sorolják a tiszafák nemzetségébe tartozó tűlevelű növényt.
A vadonban talált populáció több mint 3000 példányból áll. Egyes fák több mint 1200 évesek – mondta el Csung Hszin, a sanghaji Chen Shan Botanikus Kert illetékese. A legnagyobb fa törzsének kerülete körülbelül háromméteres – tette hozzá.
Ven Csü, a Csianghszi tartománybeli erdőgazdaság igazgatóhelyettese elmondta, hogy a Taxus mairei főleg olyan hegyvidéki területeken él, ahol bőséges a vízkészlet és sűrű a növényzet.
A tengerszint feletti magasság, a talaj minősége és a levegő páratartalma is jó élőhelyet teremt a Taxus maireinek abban a régióban, ahol felfedezték. A vadőröket és a helyi lakosságot is mozgósították a ritka fafajta közös védelmére.
