 A Veterinary Record című állatorvostudományi folyóiratban publikált tanulmányukban a kutatók bemutatták azokat az eseteket, amelyekben legelőször azonosították a SARS-CoV-2 először Nagy-Britanniában megjelent alfa variánsát (B.1.1.7.). Két macskának és egy kutyának lett pozitív a PCR-tesztje, illetve két másik macskánál és egy kutyánál mutattak ki antitestet vérükben kettő-hat héttel az után, hogy szívbetegséget diagnosztizáltak náluk.
 Ezen állatok esetében több gazdánál lépett fel légzőszervi betegség hetekkel az előtt, hogy állatuk beteg lett, vagy pozitív lett a Covid-19-tesztje – olvasható a Phys.Org. tudományos-ismeretterjesztő hírportálon.
 „Bemutattuk a súlyos szívrendellenességek jellemezte atipikus klinikai tüneteket, amely jól ismert komplikáció a Covid-19-ben szenvedő emberek esetében, de háziállatok esetében még soha nem írták le” – mondta Luca Ferasin állatorvos, a tanulmány vezető szerzője.
 A kutatók felhívták a figyelmet arra, hogy háziállatok esetében viszonylag ritka betegség a Covid-19 és megfigyeléseik szerint a fertőzés emberről terjedhet állatra, nem pedig fordítva.
