A parázsló, de még álló fát a nemzeti park erdejének alacsonyabban fekvő területén találta meg a héten a park kutatói csoportjának egy tagja, amikor egy ösvényen haladva füstfelhőt vett észre az alatta lévő szakadékban. A füst egy tavaly leégett területen álló egyetlen mamutfenyőből származott. A hatalmas fa, amely valószínűleg évszázadok vagy akár évezredek óta áll ott, úgy nézett ki, mint egy füstölő kémény a megfeketedett erdő közepén – írja a Guardian.



Augusztusban egy villámcsapástól keletkezett erdőtűz terjedt el a nemzeti park területén, amely több mint kétezer éve álló fáknak, köztük a világ legnagyobbjának, Sherman tábornok fájának is otthont ad.



A tűz heteken át égett mintegy 610 négyzetkilométeren, mielőtt a tűzoltóknak sikerült megfékezniük a lángokat december végére. Bár a lángok eltűntek, néhány parázs túlélhette egyes fák belsejében a téli esőt és havazást is.



Egy fa belseje, csakúgy, mint egy fatüzelésű kályha, oxigénben gazdag, védett helyet biztosít a tűz tartós égéséhez.



Az azonban, hogy a mamutfenyő egy egész tél esőit és havazásait túlélve füstöl, a különösen száraz kaliforniai télnek köszönhető: az elmúlt két tél kevéske havazását leszámítva az állam nagy részén szélsőségesen száraz körülmények uralkodnak.



A szakértők arra figyelmeztetnek, hogy az állam növényvilágának példa nélküli szárazsága korai és pusztító tűzszezont hozhat idén. Az óriás mamutfenyőknek (Sequoiadendron giganteum) különleges a kapcsolatuk a tűzzel. A 20. század nagy részében az erdészek azon dolgoztak, hogy megvédjék ezeket az ősi fákat a tüzektől. Az 1960-as és 1970-es években azonban meglepő dolgot figyeltek meg: a leégett területeken fiatal csemeték indultak fejlődésnek.



A megfigyelés nyomán felfedezték, hogy az óriás mamutfenyőnek tűzre van szüksége ahhoz, hogy kiengedje magjait.



Mivel a mamutfenyőknek tűz kell, a kaliforniai tűzvédelmi hatóságok voltak az irányított égetés legkorábbi támogatói.



A célzott, ellenőrzött erdőégetést az államban élő őslakosok már évezredek óta gyakorolták a földgazdálkodás egyik formájaként. A 60-as és 70-es években a Sequoia Nemzeti Parkban szándékosan gyújtottak tüzeket ellenőrzött körülmények között, az alacsony intenzitású, villámlás okozta lángokat pedig hagyták leégni. Amikor a lángok hője eléri a fa magasan lévő ágait, a mamutfenyő ragacsos gyantaréteggel védett tobozai megolvadnak és kinyílnak. Több száz apró mag hullik ekkor a talajra, ahol a tűz nyomán tápanyagokban gazdag, dús föld marad hátra – számolt be az MTI.
