A helyben élő falusiak banánleveleket dobtak le az elefántnak, hogy etessék, mivel az akció egész éjszaka tartott. Végül az állatot a lábaira erősített hevederekkel sikerült kiemelni. A fejjel lefelé lógó elefántot lassan, óvatosan húzták ki a kútból. A megmentett állatot a közeli erdőben engedik szabadon.

A New York-i Hunter College adjunktusa, Christopher C. Gilbert által felfedezett alsó zápfog egy eddig ismeretlen nemzetségbe és fajba (Kapi ramnagarensis) tartozó egyedé volt.
Csaknem egy évszázad óta ez az első új fosszilis emberszabású majomfaj, amelyet a híres lelőhelyen, Ramnagarban felfedeztek – olvasható a Phys.Org tudományos-ismeretterjesztő hírportálon.
„Azonnal tudtuk, hogy egy főemlős fogáról van szó, de a területen addig feltárt egyetlen főemlőséhez sem hasonlított” – idézte fel a szakember, hozzátéve, hogy a zápfog alakja és mérete alapján az első tippjük az volt, hogy a gibbonfélék egy ősétől származhat.
A Proceedings of the Royal Society B című folyóiratban publikált eredmények szerint a zápfogat még 2015-ben fedezték fel. Azóta számos vizsgálatot elvégeztek rajta annak megerősítéséért, hogy valóban egy eddig ismeretlen faj egyedétől származik, és hogy elhelyezzék az emberszabásúak családfáján.
A szakemberek szerint a Ramnagarban talált fog legkevesebb 5 millió évvel régebbi az eddig ismert legkorábbi gibbonfosszíliánál, betekintést nyújtva a család evolúciójának korai szakaszába.
A szakemberek szerint a zápfog kora bizonyítja, hogy a nagy emberszabású majmok – köztük az orangutánok ősei – és a gibbonfélék Afrikából Ázsiába vándorlása nagyjából azonos időben és útvonalon történt.

A komplexum ugyanis kénytelen volt bezárni márciusban, amikor a koronavírus miatt országos szintű karantént rendeltek el. Azóta kevés szállodának engedélyezték az újbóli megnyitást, és azóta sem sokan büszkélkedhetnek egy 7,5 millió literes medencével, amelyet alternatív célra használtak fel.
„Nincsenek bevételeink, ezért júniusban körülbelül 16 000 gyöngyházas indiai tarkasügért helyeztünk a medencébe” – mondta az Aveda ügyvezető igazgatója, Jyotish Surendran.

Fellángoltak a kasztbeli megkülönböztetés elleni indulatok Indiában, miután a rendőrség közlése szerint magasabb kasztbeli férfiak egy csoportja leemelt egy pária nőt a halotti máglyáról, arra hivatkozva, hogy a községük területén nem lehet elhamvasztani.
A gyászszertartást az észak-indiai Uttar Pades államban tartották a múlt héten, amikor mintegy 200 férfi megakadályozta a hamvasztást – közölte a rendőrség és a nő férje.
„A családom és én könyörögtünk a férfiaknak, hogy engedjék lefolytatni a gyászszertartást, de nem hallgattak ránk. Kihívtuk a rendőröket is, de semmi nem történt” – mondta Rahul Badzsanija, a nő férje.
A hamvasztást végül egy másik faluban, négy kilométerre távolabb végezték el. A halotti máglyáról a tüzelőfát ledobáló férfiakról és a földön fekvő nőről készült internetes videót kedden közel 200 ezren nézték meg.

A növekvő népesség és a házak, autópályák és ipari létesítmények építése miatti földigények a páriák kiszorításával tovább növelték a feszültséget, elsősorban vidéken. A hagyományos temetkezési és hamvasztási helyeik is veszélyben vannak, a páriáknak gyakran napokig kell szállítaniuk családtagjaik holttestét, amíg találnak helyet, ahol eltemethetik vagy elégethetik őket.
Népszámlálási adatok szerint India alacsony kasztokhoz tartozó lakosságának több mint fele földnélküli.

Április 30-ig meghosszabbíthatja India az országos karantént – írja az India Today. A végső döntést még nem hirdették ki, viszont mint írják, „konszenzus született” Narendra Modi miniszterelnök és miniszterei közt a hosszabbításról. Bizonyos szabályokon viszont valószínűleg lazítanak majd.
Nem tűnik úgy, hogy a lassan három hete érvényben lévő országos házikarantén Indiában hibátlanul működne: tegnap rekordszámú új koronavírus-fertőzést regisztráltak az országban: több mint 1000 új fertőzöttet azonosítottak, ezzel 7500-ra nőtt a fertőzöttek száma.
Bár Narendra Modi arra kérte az önkormányzatokat, hogy mindent tegyenek meg a szabályok betartatásába érdekében, mely miatt az ország egyes részeiben kifejezetten durván kezdett el fellépni a rendőrség a karanténszegőkkel szemben, várhatóan lazít majd egyes gazdasági, mezőgazdasági szabályokon. Várhatóan gazdasági mentőcsomaggal is készül majd a kormány egyes ágazatok, például a mezőgazdaság megsegítésének érdekében.
