A petíciót Qualia Reed író indította. Az aláírásgyűjtés célja, hogy Muskot megfosszák kanadai állampolgárságától, mivel a techmilliárdos „Kanada nemzeti érdekeivel ellentétes tevékenységet folytatott” azzal, hogy Trump tanácsadójaként tevékenykedik. Az elnök pedig beiktatása óta többször utalt rá, hogy Kanada lehetne az Egyesült Államok 51. tagállama.
Amint az a Canadian Press megjegyzi, 500 aláírás szükséges ahhoz, hogy egy ilyen petíció a parlament alsóháza elé kerüljön. Ezt szinte azonnal megugrotta az indítvány, cikkünk írásának pillanatában közel 165 ezer aláírásnál jár. A parlament a tervek szerint egy hónap múlva, március 24-én fog legközelebb ülésezni.
Musk édesanyja révén rendelkezik kanadai állampolgársággal, ettől fosztaná meg a jelenlegi indítvány.
