 A bíboros azt mondta, hogy „nemcsak Ukrajna térfelén pattog a labda” a békéért tett erőfeszítéseket illetően, hanem „mindenkinek játszania kell”. Elmondása szerint Ukrajna már ismertette az ajánlatait, de ez kevés, ha mások nem tesznek a békéért.
 A bíboros júniusban járt Oroszországban is, ahol Kirill ortodox pátriárkával, Maria Llova-Belova gyermekjogi ombudsmannal és Jurij Uszakovval, a Kreml külpolitikai tanácsadójával találkozott. Előtte pedig Kijevben is járt, és több ukrán tisztviselővel találkozott a CNN szerint.
 A hírportál azt is megjegyezte: Zuppi bíboros kínai látogatása ahhoz köthető, hogy Ukrajna és nyugati szövetségeseik korábban jelezték: Kínának és Hszi Csin-ping kínai elnöknek lehet némi esélye arra, hogy békekötésre ösztönözzék Moszkvát.

 A hivatalos közlemény szerint Zuppi bíboros küldetésének célja, hogy „hozzájáruljon a feszültség enyhítéséhez Ukrajnában, abban a – Ferenc pápa által soha fel nem adott – reményben, hogy ez békefolyamatot indíthat meg”. Hozzátették: a küldetés pontos részletei még kidolgozás alatt állnak.
 Vatikáni diplomáciai források úgy tudják, a tervek szerint Zuppi külön folytatna tárgyalásokat Volodimir Zelenszkij ukrán és Vlagyimir Putyin orosz elnökkel.
 Ferenc pápa április 30-án, miután visszatért a Vatikánba magyarországi látogatásáról, utalt arra, hogy a pápai állam békemisszió létrehozásán munkálkodik azzal a céllal, hogy véget érjen a háború Ukrajnában.
 „Folyamatban van egy misszió (kialakítása), de ez még nem nyilvános” – mondta akkor Ferenc pápa újságíróknak.
