Phoenixben a korábbi június 15-i melegrekord 46 celsius-fok volt, 1974-ben mérték, azazcsaknem fél évszázada. Hasonlóan rekkenő a hőség Arizonán kívül Utah, Montana és Wyoming egyes részein, amelyeken ugyancsak napi rekordok dőlnek meg, bár ezek pár fokkal alacsonyabbak, mint Phoenixben. A térségben igen alacsony a páratartalom, és a száraz kánikula fokozza a bozót- és erdőtüzek veszélyét.
