Három nappal az orlandói melegbár ellen elkövetett fegyveres támadás évfordulója előtt, az Amerikai Egyesült Államok Kongresszusa egyhangúan fogadta el azt az új törvényt, amely a Pulse éjszakai melegbárt nemzeti emlékhellyé nyilvánította. A képviselőház és a szenátus jóváhagyása után a törvény már csak az amerikai elnök és egyben az LMBTQ közösségek támogatójának aláírására vár. A törvényt az a republikánus szenátor, Rick Scott terjesztette elő, aki a tömegmészárlás idején Florida kormányzója volt.
2016. június 12-én Orlandóban egy afgán származású terrorista rontott be az éjszakai melegbárba, és vaktában lövöldözni kezdett. A tömegmészárlásnak 49 halálos áldozata volt, és 53-an sérültek meg. Az elkövetőt, a 29 éves Omar Mateent a rendőrök agyonlőtték. A gesztust a Pulse melegbár a Facebook-oldalán köszönte meg az amerikai törvényhozó testületnek.
