 Kritikusan veszélyeztetett faj hozott világra utódot a Chicago melletti Brookfield Állatkertben. 
 A mendeszantilop (Addax) a világ egyik legritkább emlősfaja, így a borjú születése fontos lépés a génállomány fennmaradásában. A fogságban történő fajmegőrzés szerepe azért fontos, mert a vadonban már csak alig több mint száz egyed él, például Mauritániában, Nigerben és Csádban. Az érintetlen természet, vagyis a vadvilág élőhelyének zsugorodása és az orvvadászat számos fajra jelent veszélyt. Az állatkertek mellett magángazdaságokban is élnek a ritka antilopfaj egyedei, számuk összesen további százra tehető.
 A mendeszantilopból a vadonban már csak alig több mint száz egyed él.
