Michael Ciannilli, a NASA egyik vezetője elmondta, hogy a Challenger baleste óta ez az eddigi legnagyobb darab, amelyet megtaláltak az űrsiklóból.
A roncsot egy dokumentumfilmes stáb búvárai fedezték fel még márciusban, amikor egy második világháborús repülőgép maradványai után kutattak.
Az akkor készült felvételek alapján a NASA igazolta, hogy a darab az 1986. január 28-án felszállt űrsikló része volt.
Egyelőre a tengerfenéken kell hagyni a darabot
Az óceán fenekén, a homokba fúródott roncsdarabból mintegy 4,5 méterszer 4,5 méteres darab látható, így akár ennél nagyobb is lehet. A szakemberek szerint feltehetően az űrsikló hasának egy része lehet.Az űrsikló darabját egyelőre az óceán fenekén, Cape Canaveral közelében, Florida partjainál hagyják, a sorsáról a NASA dönt majd. A roncs továbbra is az amerikai kormány tulajdona.
A Challenger röviddel felemelkedése után szakadt szét, héttagú legénysége, köztük Christa McAuliffe tanárnő is életét vesztette a balesetben.
