Mint ismert, az Azovsztal acélműben dúlt a háború eddigi egyik legvéresebb összecsapása. A délkelet-ukrajnai kikötőváros 82 napig tartott ki az orosz erők ellen. Az Azovsztal üzem volt az ukrán ellenállás utolsó pontja az oroszok által lerombolt Mariupolban.
A város hősies védelmének emléket állító betlehem mellett Ukrajna további két betlehemet is kiállított, az egyiket a Nemzeti Építészeti Múzeum, a másikat pedig a Cserkaszi régió egyik lakosa készítette.
