Ihor Klimenko belügyminiszter szerint április elején Ukrajna területének mintegy 25%-a volt szennyezett robbanásveszélyes tárgyakkal. A kutyák az emberekkel egyenrangúan dolgoznak a háború alatt. A négylábúak aknákat, rögtönzött robbanószerkezeteket, lövedékeket, fel nem robbant rakétákat keresnek.

A kutyákat (német, belga és holland juhászkutya) nyugdíjas rendőrkutyás szakértők képezték ki Finnországban, Belgiumban és Luxemburgban. A kutyák kiképzése több hónapig tartott, átadásukra Lengyelországban került sor.
A kutyákat speciális lábbelivel, szemüvegekkel, mellényekkel, táplálékkal látják el. Ezenkívül a kutyák speciális eszközökkel rendelkeznek, amelyeket a mellényükhöz rögzítenek. Segítenek a radioaktív elemek felkutatásában is.
Emellett a projekt keretében az ukrán hadsereg több speciális drónt is kapott, amelyek segítenek felderíteni az aknákat és más robbanószerkezeteket.
A 2025-ig tartó projekt becsült költségvetése 3 millió euró. Az EU összesen 50 aknakereső kutya átadását tervezi, az első négylábúak 2023 márciusában érkeztek Ukrajnába.

Patron, a jack russell terrier még a háború első hónapjaiban vált az ukrán hadsereg egyik szimbólumává. Most ő lett az első kutya, amelyet az ENSZ jószolgálati nagykövetévé neveztek ki.
