A pénteken Alaszka felett, majd a hétvégén Kanada felett lelőtt ismeretlen repülő tárgy is egy-egy légballon volt – mondta Chuck Schumer demokrata szenátor az ABC-nek.
A szenátor azt mondta a hírcsatornának: „vad”, hogy egy ideig nem lehetett tudni, pontosan mit lőttek le az amerikai vadászgépek Kanada, illetve az Egyesült Államok légterében, de végül Jake Sullivan, a Fehér Ház nemzetbiztonsági tanácsadója tájékoztatta őt és néhány politikus kollégáját a két incidens részleteiről.
Schumer arról is beszélt, hogy az amerikai légierő először azonosította a légballonokat, mielőtt lelőtték őket.
A szenátor az ismert információktól függetlenül támogatja a további, kongresszusi szinten zajló vizsgálatokat, melyeknek célja több részletet megtudni az intézkedések körülményeiről és a lelőtt objektumok fontosabb tulajdonságairól is.

A nyolc F-16-os vadászgép és a repülőrajt kiszolgáló mintegy 150 katona pénteken érkezett meg az országba.
Az Amerikai Egyesült Államok nemcsak a szárazföldi csapatok ezer katonáját, hanem a légierő egy alakulatát is Romániába vezényelte Németországból. Az F-16-os vadászgépek és a repülőrajt kiszolgáló személyzet pénteken érkezett meg a kelet-romániai Borcea légitámaszpontra – tudatta a román védelmi minisztérium.
Az amerikai F-16-osok mintegy két hétig fognak a román légierő F-16-osaival közös hadgyakorlatokon részt venni, továbbá az olasz légierőnek a Duna-parti bázison tavaly december óta szolgálatot teljesítő alakulatával közösen megerősített légi járőrözési feladatokat látnak el.
Ebben az időszakban az amerikai haditengerészet négy F/A-18-as Super Hornet vadászrepülőgépe és ötven katonája is a Borcea légitámaszponton gyakorlatozik. Az amerikai repülőgépeket a NATO-csapatok együttműködési készségének fejlesztése érdekében küldték a térségbe, a közös járőrözés pedig a reakció- és elrettentő képesség növelését célozza – közölte a román védelmi tárca.
