 Az úgynevezett „végítélet-napi” repülőgépek egy atomháború esetén légi stratégiai- és irányítóközpontként szolgálhatnak.  Az új, Boeing 747-8s típusú gépeket a Korean Airtől veszik át, és 2025 szeptemberéig szállítják le őket. Az végítélet-napi flotta repülői tulajdonképpen átalakított Boeing 747-8s típusú gépek lesznek – írja a 24.hu –, és a jelenlegi, korosodó Boeing E-4B Nightwatch-ok leváltását szolgálják majd.
 Ezeken a gépeken utazhat például egy nukleáris háború esetén az amerikai elnök, a védelmi miniszter és a kormányzati, valamint katonai illetékesek is. A jelenlegi, négy gépből álló flottából legalább egy mindig riasztásra készen áll, hogy indokolt esetben a nevezett magasrangú személyek szolgálatára legyen.
 Az E-4B-k a Boeing 747-200-as gépek katonai célokra módosított változatai, és akár 111 főt is be tudnak fogadni. Összesen hat részre vannak osztva, egyebek mellett parancsnoki szoba, tárgyaló, és egy pihenő is van az 1970 óta szolgáló gépeken.
