 Nem sokkal azután, hogy Oroszország holdra szállási kísérlete csúfos kudarcot vallott – a Luna-25 szonda az égitestbe csapódott –, India sikeresen landolt a Holdon.
  Ezzel a világon a negyedik olyan ország lett – az Egyesült Államok, a Szovjetunió és Kína után –, amelynek sikerült ez a művelet.
   
 A Csandrajáan–3 leszállóegysége, a Vikram magyar idő szerint szerdán 14 óra 34 perckor érkezett meg a Hold déli pólusára. Érdemes beletekerni a felvételbe, és figyelemmel kísérni a sikeres akciót. A 45. percnél látható az üdvrivalgás a földi irányító központban: A küldetés még július 14-én indult el a Földről, majd a Csandrajáan–3 augusztus 5-én állt pályára az égitest körül. A déli pólus azért kiemelten fontos – itt próbáltak meg landolni az oroszok is –, mert a tudósok úgy vélik, vízjeget tartalmaz. Ebből oxigént, vizet, valamint a rakéták számára üzemanyagot lehetne előállítani.
 A landolás ezen a területen nem egyszerű, mivel sok a kráter, a térség pedig árnyékos. India korábbi küldetése, a Csandrajáan–2 az oroszok Luna-25-jéhez hasonlóan kudarcot vallott.
