Az orosz–ukrán háború kezdete óta mintegy ötven ukrán gyerekről gondoskodtak a vatikáni gyermekkórházban.
Ferenc pápa március 19-én, szombaton a római Bambino Gesù kórházban tett látogatást. A Szentatya a Vatikán által fenntartott gyermekkórházban találkozott az ott ápolás alatt álló ukrajnai menekült gyerekekkel és hozzátartozóikkal – tájékoztatta a sajtót Matteo Bruni, a Szentszék sajtószolgálatának igazgatója.
Az orosz invázió következtében számos beteg gyermek kezelésé szakadt meg Ukrajnában. Közülük tizenkilenc részesül ellátásban a Bambino Gesù kórház Róma közelében, Palidoróban található épületében.
A háború miatt közel ötven gyermek érkezett a pápai kórházba, akik különféle betegségekben szenvednek és onkológiai, valamint neurológiai ellátásban részesülnek.
Ferenc pápa a délután folyamán valamennyi kisgyermeket meglátogatta, majd visszatért a Vatikánba – zárult a szentszéki közlemény.
Ferenc pápa a háború kitörését követően, az Angelus elimádkozása után hangsúlyozta: „Aki háborút indít, aki háborút provokál, az elfelejti az emberiséget. Nem az emberekből indul ki, nem az emberek konkrét életét nézi, hanem a részérdekeket, a hatalmi érdekeket helyezi mindenek elé. A fegyverek ördögi és perverz logikáját követi, amely a legtávolabb áll Isten akaratától. És eltávolodik a hétköznapi emberektől, akik békét akarnak, és akik minden konfliktusban az igazi áldozatok, akik a saját bőrükkel fizetnek a háború ostobaságaiért.
Az idősekre gondolok, azokra, akik most menedéket keresnek, a gyermekeikkel menekülő anyákra… Testvéreink és nővéreink ők, akik számára sürgősen humanitárius folyosókat kell nyitni, és akiket be kell fogadni!”
