Hó borította be a világ legszárazabb sivatagát, az Atacama-sivatagot Észak-Chilében – közölte az ott található ALMA obszervatórium.
Az X-re föltett videofelvételhez fűzött szöveg szerint „hihetetlen, de havazik az Atacama-sivatagban, a világ legszárazabb sivatagában”, amire 10 éve nem volt példa a térségben.
Az Atacama egy magaslaton fekszik. Rendkívüli éghajlata ideálissá teszi az űrbeli megfigyelésekhez.
Az átlagos csapadék évi 3 milliméter a térségben, de volt olyan is, hogy 40 évig egyáltalán nem esett csapadék.
Az ALMA egy 66 darab mozgatható antennából álló, rádiótávcső-rendszer, amelyek akár 16 kilométeres távolságra elszórva helyezkednek el.
Szakértők szerint a váratlanul leesett hó befolyásolhatja a kutató állomások munkáját, és rövid távú változásokat okozhat a sivatagi ökoszisztémában.

Szokatlanul hideg idő és havazás csapott le a Brazília déli részén található Santa Catarina tartományra, mely leginkább a napos tengerpartjairól vált híressé.
A három napig tartó havazás több város hóval takart be, a helyi lakosok nagy örömére. Brazíliában ritka a havazás, Santa Catarina államban utoljára 2000-ben hullott hó. A hőmérséklet a hajnali órákban több településen is mínusz három fok alatt van.
