A SpaceX több száz kémszatellitből álló hálózatot épít egy titkos szerződés keretében egy amerikai hírszerző ügynökséggel – közölte öt, a programot ismerő forrás a Reuters szerint.
A hálózatot a SpaceX Starshield üzletága építi ki egy 2021-ben aláírt, 1,8 milliárd dolláros szerződés alapján a National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) nevű, kémszatellitek kezelésével foglalkozó hírszerző ügynökséggel – írja a hírügynökség a saját értesülései alapján.
Szakértők szerint az Elon Musk cégével kötött megállapodás azt mutatja, hogy a Pentagon egyre komolyabban fektet be olyan hadi technológia fejlesztésébe, amely alacsony Föld körüli pályán keringő műholdas rendszerekkel támogatná az USA szárazföldi haderejét.
Ha a program sikerrel jár, az nagy előrelépést jelenthet az amerikai haderőnek abban, hogy a világon bárhol villámgyorsan beazonosíthassa a célpontjait.
A Wall Street Journal arról már korábban, idén februárban beszámolt, hogy az USA kormánya 1,8 milliárd dollárt különített el a titkos Starshield szerződésre, de akkor még nem lehetett tudni, hogy kivel és milyen célból kötötték a megállapodást.
Arról egyelőre nincs információja a Reutersnek sem, hogy a kémműholdprogram mikor léphet életbe, ahogy azt sem tudni egyelőre, hogy a SapceX milyen alvállalkozókkal dolgozhat együtt a projekten.
