Évekkel ezelőtt vásárolta a festményt egy igen szerény összegért, és csak most ajánlotta fel árverésre. A szakértők vizsgálatai alapján kiderült, hogy a tulajdonosa által az Artcurial francia aukciósházba bevitt festmény alkotója a leginkább Salai („Kisördög”) néven ismert festő, Gian Giacomo Caprotti (1480–1524), aki nemcsak Leonardo legjobb tanítványa, de legközelebbi munkatársa is volt.

A Bűnbánó Magdolna című, 65-ször 50 centiméteres, fatáblára festett képről a 15. századi lombard festészet szakértője, Cristina Geddo állapította meg, hogy minden bizonnyal Salai munkája. A művészettörténész szerint több tényező bizonyítja, hogy a meglehetősen kétértelmű, a szakrális és a profán határán mozgó portrét Salai festette. Így a leonardói sfumato festési technika tökéletes ismerete vagy a festményen hagyott ujjlenyomat, amely Leonardóra és tanítványára volt jellemző. Az 1515 és 1520 körüli éveken festett táblakép jó állapotban maradt fenn, de alapos tisztításra vár – mondta el az AFP-nek az aukciósház régi mesterekkel foglalkozó szakértője, Eric Turquin. A november 18-ra kitűzött párizsi árverésen 100-150 ezer euró (36,6-55 millió forint) közötti leütési árral számolnak.

Gian Giacomo Caprotti tízévesen került Leonardo műtermébe és az ott eltöltött 25 év alatt mindenki másnál jobban elsajátította a reneszánsz polihisztor kifinomult festési technikáját. Salai Leonardo több festményéhez is modellt állt és számos rajzán is szerepel. Caprottitól, akit kisebb-nagyobb csibészségei miatt neveztek el Kisördögnek, kevesebb mint féltucat saját munka maradt fenn, közülük egyedül a Megváltó Krisztus található múzeumban, a milánói Pinacoteca Ambrosianában, a város védőszentjéről, Szent Ambrusról elnevezett képtárban, a többi magántulajdonban van.
