A pereskedés azután kezdődött meg, hogy a kormányzat arra kötelezte a közösségi platformot, hogy távolítson el különböző bejegyzéseket és profilokat, amelyek megsértették az Indiában érvényben lévő, trágárságra és rágalmazásra vonatkozó törvényeket – számolt be róla a The Verge.
A két fél közötti csatározás tavaly májusban kezdődött meg, amikor India új informatikai szabályozást adott ki az online tartalmakra vonatkozóan, és ezt egy rendőrségi razzia is követte a Twitter indiai irodájában, miután az egyik kormánypárti politikus koronavírusról szóló tweetjét manipulált tartalom címkével látták el – írta a The Verge.
Tavaly júniusban az indiai törvényhozók azzal fenyegették meg Twittert, hogy a felhasználók szabálysértéseiért is a platformot fogják felelősségre vonni.
A közösségi platform már hosszú ideje azzal érvel, hogy ők megfelelnek a helyi véleménynyilvánítás vonatkozó jogszabályoknak, de az indiai trágárságra és lázító beszédre vonatkozó törvényei rendkívül szigorúak. Az országban a véleménynyilvánítási korlátozásokkal próbálják a környezeti problémákról és politikai kérdésekről való párbeszédet a háttérbe szorítani.
A Twitter jogi küzdelmét bonyolítja, hogy Elon Musk megpróbálta felvásárolni a vállalatot. Júniusban Musk ígéretet tett arra, hogy elkötelezetten szeretne kiállni a szólásszabadság mellet, de emellett helyi szabályozásoknak is megfelel majd az oldal működése. Az amerikai milliárdos továbbá létszámleépítéskere is utalt, és ez a cég indiai érdekvédelmét még jobban megnehezítheti.
Annak ellenére, hogy Musk aláírta a megállapodást a cég felvásárlásáról, még saját maga is bizonytalan abba, hogy a felvásárlás megvalósul-e, ami további kételyeket ébreszt a cég jövőbeli sorsát illetően.
