Az arcfelismerő rendszerek előnyeit többször hangoztatták már a szakértők. Éppen ezért ma már nemcsak a nagy technológiai vállalatok alkalmazzák ezeket, hanem például boltok is – azért, hogy kiszúrják a tömegben azokat, akik esetleg (ilyen-olyan bűncselekmények miatt) körözés alatt állnak.
Ilyen arcfelismerő rendszert használ többek közt az Egyesült Királyságban mintegy 200 üzlettel rendelkező lánc, a Southern Co-Op is. Nem mindegyik boltjukban használják, „csak” 35-ben. Azonban egy jogvédő szervezet, a Big Brother Watch így is komoly aggályokat fogalmazott meg az üzemeltetéssel kapcsolatban, ami után írásbeli panaszt nyújtott be az Egyesült Királyság információs biztosának hivatalához (ICO).
A szervezet úgy véli, hogy a rendszer üzemeltetése egyáltalán nem jogszerű, hiszen a platform által rögzített képek mindenkiről elkészülnek, aki betér a 35 bolt valamelyikébe. Sokan azonban nem is tudnak róla, hogy figyelik őket, ami „hátborzongató viselkedés” egy üzlet részéről – fogalmaztak a beadványban a BBC szerint.
A boltok üzemeltetője reakciójában azzal érvelt, hogy a Facewatch nevű eszközt csak ott működtetik, ahol korábban rablás, lopás vagy egyéb bűncselekmény történt. Az eszközt pedig csakis a személyzet védelme miatt vezették be. Hozzátették azt is, hogy a rendszer alapvetően arra hivatott, hogy ellenőrizze a boltba betérőket, akad-e köztük olyan, akinek a biometrikus adata szerepel valamely hatóság listáján. Ez pedig – fogalmaztak – nem egyenlő a kémkedéssel.

A világ legnagyobb arcfelismerő rendszere jöhet létre az Európai Unióban, ha az Európai Bizottság elfogadja a Prüm II. rendőrségi arcképadatbázis automatikus adatcseréjével kapcsolatos javaslatot.
A 2021 decemberében benyújtott javaslat a tagországok arcképadatbázisait tenné kölcsönösen kereshetővé, hogy hatékonyabbá tegye a bűnüldöző szervezetek munkáját.
Korántsem zökkenőmentes ezen adatbázisok működése, ugyanis nem elég megbízhatóak, jó pár tévedésből bekerült fotó van bennük, ezért valós idejű felhasználásuk erősen megkérdőjelezhető.
A Prüm II. úgy hárítaná el a problémákat, hogy utólagos azonosításra használnák, nem pedig élőben például egy gyanútlan járókelő leteperése előtt. Ugyanúgy összevetnék viszont CCTV-felvételekkel, közösségi médiában megjelent vagy mobilon talált fotókkal.
Az élő arcfelismerő rendszerrel ellentétben itt valószínűleg 10 vagy akár 100 találatot adhat a rendszer, és mindenképpen embernek kellene döntenie az eredményről – írta a portál.
A Prüm első változatában 2005-ben hét európai ország – Ausztria, Belgium, Franciaország, Hollandia, Luxemburg, Németország és Spanyolország – kapcsolta össze adatbázisait a nemzetközi bűnözés elleni küzdelem jegyében. A különböző országok rendőrségei így ujjlenyomatokat, DNS-adatokat vagy járműtulajdonosok adatait oszthatták meg egymással.
Magyarország jelenleg 30 millió arcképpel rendelkezik, míg Olaszországnak 17 millió, Németországnak 5,5 millió, Franciaországnak pedig 6 millió fotója van, ám ezek nem mindig pontosak, 2021 nyarán például 218 ezer olyan fényképet töröltek Hollandiában, amelyeket tévesen vettek fel az adatbázisba.

Dries Depoorter belga művész a kormányülések YouTube-közvetítéseit figyelteti a mesterséges intelligenciával, hogy kiderüljön, melyik honatya figyel kevésbé az ülésre.
Aki nézett már parlamenti közvetítést, az egész biztosan láthatta, hogy nem minden politikus figyel oda a képviselőtársa felszólalására. Ők általában újságot olvasnak, vagy a táblagépüket, mobiltelefonjukat nyomogatják. Nincs ez másként a belga törvényhozásban sem, amire most egy belga művész hívta fel a figyelmet.
Dries Depoorter mesterséges intelligencia segítségével figyeli a flamand kormányülések YouTube-közvetítéseit. Amikor a videó elindul, a szoftver a gépi tanulás segítségével azt figyeli, hogy melyik politikus nyomogatja a telefonját, majd egy arcfelismerő szoftver be is azonosítja a szóban forgó honatyákat.
Miután a beazonosítás megtörtént, az így készült videókat Depoorter a Twitterre és az Instagramra is felteszi – írja a The Next Web.
Bár a projekt egy lényeges problémára hívja fel a figyelmet, nem mindenkinek tetszik a művész által készített „szégyenfal”. Azt ugyanis természetesen nem tudni, hogy az adott politikus miért mobilozik, előfordulhat ugyanis, hogy épp egy vészhelyzet miatt nézi a kijelzőt.
Ettől függetlenül két évvel ezelőtt például a belga miniszterelnök, Jan Jambon bukott le azzal, hogy egy vita közben épp Andry Birds-özött a készülékén.

Az Alibaba kínai óriáscég olyan arcfelismerő technológiával rendelkezik, amely képes felismerni az ujgur kisebbség tagjait – írja a Kitekintő az IPVM jelentése alapján.
Az amerikai IPVM a szerdán közzétett jelentésben azt állította, hogy az Alibaba Cloud Shield szolgáltatásában – amely eredetileg arra szolgál, hogy a weblap-tulajdonosok moderálni tudjanak bizonyos nemkívánatos tartalmakat – megjelent egy, az ujgurok azonosítására alkalmas szoftver.
Következésképpen: ha például egy ujgur streamel egy videót egy olyan weboldalon, amely regisztrálva van a Cloud Shielden, a szoftver észleli, hogy a felhasználó ujgur és – felülvizsgálatra vagy eltávolításra – megjelölheti a videót.
Maga az Alibaba azt mondta, hogy „megdöbbentette”, amikor az egyik fejlesztő egység előállt a szoftverrel, amely felismeri az etnikai hovatartozást. A cég állítása szerint ezt a funkciót soha nem szánták publikus használatra, csak tesztüzemben alkalmazták. (Mindazonáltal érdekes módon az ujgurokról szóló részt nem sokkal a jelentés közzététele előtt eltávolították a technológia leírásából.)
A Hszincsiangban élő ujgurok helyzetéről már számos cikkben írtunk. Nemzetközi jogvédő szervezetek szerint a kínai tartományban akár az 1,8 milliót is elérheti azoknak az ujguroknak és más, muszlim vallású kisebbségekhez tartozó embereknek a száma, akiket a helyi kormányzat akaratuk ellenére átnevelő táborokba zárt, és gyárakban, vagy a földeken dolgoztat. Emellett a kiterjedt megfigyeléshez arcfelismerő és adatelemző technológiákat használnak.
A kínai vezetés mindig is tagadta az átnevelő központokkal és az ujgurok elnyomásával kapcsolatos vádakat. Peking álláspontja szerint a Hszincsiangban fenntartott központok önkéntes alapon biztosítanak képzéseket azok számára, akiknek az életére „hatással volt a terrorizmus és a radikalizmus”.
