 A detroiti mexikói konzulátus és az Albion College képviselői aláírták az erről szóló megállapodást a Michigan állambeli bölcsészettudományi főiskolán – közölte a mexikói külügyminisztérium.
 Az urna a dél-mexikói Lacandon őserdőből származik, az XIII–XVI. században készült agyagból. Egy kutató akkor vitte magával az Egyesült Államokba, majd ajándékozta később az albioni főiskolának, amikor még Mexikóban nem korlátozták a kulturális javak kivitelét az országból.
 
 A megegyezés szerint a különleges ereklyét a San Cristóbal de las Casas dél-mexikói kisváros múzeumába kell eljuttatni, ahol már kiállítottak egy ugyanilyen urnát.
 Ennek a maja urnának a visszaszerzése és két urna újraegyesítése hatalmas jelentőségű Mexikó és történelmi öröksége számára – közölte a külügyminisztérium.
 Az urnát, melyet egy emberalakú istenség képe díszít, egy sziklamélyedésben találták. A maják tömjénnel töltötték meg az ilyen urnákat és barlangokba helyezték, ahol áldozatot mutattak be isteneiknek – mondta el az Albion College-ban tartott rendezvényen Joel Palka amerikai kutató.
 A közép-amerikai maja civilizáció 3000 évre vezethető vissza. Virágkorát időszámítás szerint 250 és 900 között élte. A maják birodalma egykoron a mai Dél-Mexikó, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras és Salvador területét is magába foglalta.
