Az angol–walesi felsőbíróság csütörtöki végzésében úgy döntött, hogy Nicolás Maduro venezuelai elnök kormányának nem adható ki a Londonban letétbe helyezett venezuelai aranykészlet.
Az egymilliárd dollár értékűre becsült aranyat a Bank of England – a brit jegybank – őrzi, de a Maduro-kormány ellenőrzése alatt álló venezuelai központi bank jogi képviselői megpróbálták elérni a készlet kiadását.
A londoni felsőbíróság azonban csütörtökön kihirdetett döntésében elvetette a keresetet, azzal az indokkal, hogy a brit kormány egyértelműen Juan Guaido venezuelai ellenzéki vezetőt ismerte el a dél-amerikai ország államfőjének.
Maduro kormánya szerint az aranyra a koronavírus-járvány elleni küzdelem finanszírozásához lenne szükség.
Guaido ugyanakkor hivatalosan kérte, hogy a Bank of England ne adja ki Nicolás Maduro kormányának az aranykészletet. Az ellenzéki vezető szerint ugyanis Maduro valójában „korrupt célokra” használná az aranyat.
A londoni felsőbírósághoz a Bank of England is keresetet nyújtott be a vita jogerős eldöntése végett.
Az eljáró bírói testület csütörtöki végzése szerint a brit kormány Juan Guaidót ismeri el Venezuela alkotmányos ideiglenes elnökének, és ebből értelemszerűen az következik, hogy Nicolás Madurót nem ismeri el venezuelai államfőként.
A venezuelai jegybank jogi képviselője fellebbezést jelentett be a döntés ellen. Közölte: a londoni bíróság végzése „nem a valós helyzetet” tükrözi, hiszen Nagy-Britanniának van nagykövete a venezuelai fővárosban, és Venezuelának is Londonban. A jogi képviselő szerint ezt csak úgy lehet értelmezni, hogy a brit kormány Madurót ismeri el Venezuela elnökének.
A Bank of England csaknem 250 milliárd dollár értékű aranyat őriz széfjeiben. Ez a világ második legnagyobb jegybanki aranykészlete a New York-i Federal Reserve után.
