Igen súlyos betegség az általában fiataloknál jelentkező szklerózis multiplex (SM), a központi idegrendszer gyulladásos és jelenleg gyógyíthatatlan betegsége. Kezeléssel viszont csökkenthető a betegség kiteljesedése és javítható az életminőség.
Az Amszterdami Egyetem Orvosi Központjának kutatói egy speciális mobilalkalmazásról számoltak be a Chaos című szakfolyóiratban. Egy olyan appról van szó, amellyel nyomon követhető, hogy miként gépel egy felhasználó az okostelefonja billentyűzetén. Kísérleti alanyaik fele SM betegségben szenvedett, a többiek alkották a kontrollcsoportot. Kiderült, hogy a billentyűleütések dinamikájából, a gépelés közben elkövetett hibákból és azok javításából következtetni lehet az említett betegség meglétére, illetve az állapot romlására még azelőtt, mielőtt azt a beteg valójában érzékelné.
A szklerózis multiplex betegségben szenvedők 3-12 havonta mennek kontrollra, és általában az MRI a legjobb módszer az agykárosodásban bekövetkezett változások mérésére. Viszont a holland kutatók eljárásával a betegek folyamatosan figyelemmel kísérhetők, és azonnal kiderül, ha új kezelésre lenne szükség. A folyamatos monitorozás egyébként is megbízhatóbb képet adna a páciens állapotáról, mint az alkalmi látogatások. Azok is jól járnának az okostelefonos appal, akiknek a körülményei nehézkessé teszik az orvos rendszeres felkeresését.
