Az Instagram még 2019-ben ismertette a Reels nevű fejlesztését – a rövid videók készítésére alkalmas funkciót először Brazíliában kezdték el tesztelni, majd június közepén bejelentették: a francia és a német felhasználók is kipróbálhatják.
Alapvetően az, hogy egy szolgáltatás lemásolja egy másik funkcióit, nem ritkaság. A Reels jelenléte azonban akkor kezdett el igazán izgalmassá válni, amikor nyilvánvalóvá vált: az Egyesült Államok be akarja tiltani a TikTokot. Ennek eredményeként július közepén be is jelentette az Instagram, hogy heteken belül érkezhet a saját TikTokja.
Az Instagram bejelentette: 50 országban, köztük az Egyesült Államokban, az Egyesült Királyságban, Franciaországban, Japánban és Ausztráliában is elérhetővé teszik a felhasználók számára a Reels nevű funkciót.
A legfeljebb 15 másodperces bejegyzéseket ugyanúgy lehet létrehozni, ahogy azt az instagramos sztoriknál már megszokhattuk, ám a szerkesztői eszközök jóval kifinomultabbak lettek: nemcsak zenéket adhatnak hozzá a felhasználók a klipekhez, de le is lassíthatják, vagy felgyorsíthatják azokat, így téve hasonlóvá a végeredményt, mint amit a kínai alkalmazásban megszokhattunk.
A másik nagy különbség a sztorikhoz képest a megosztásban rejlik. A Reels segítségével gyártott klipeket egy külön fül alatt találhatják majd meg a felhasználók a Felfedezés menüpont alatt, de akár a saját hírfolyamukba is kitehetik azt.
Hogy mennyire fog beválni a felhasználóknak az újdonság, azt egyelőre nem tudni, ahogy azt sem, átpártolnak-e az amerikai júzerek az Instagram újdonságához azok után, hogy Donald Trumpék be akarják tiltani a konkurenciát. És persze az sem tisztázott, mi lesz akkor, ha a Microsoft felvásárolja a TikTok amerikai részlegét, hiszen ebben az esetben mégsem tiltják majd be azt a tengerentúlon.

A cégvezető az után szólalt meg, hogy Donald Trump amerikai elnök megfenyegette a TikTokot: ha nem szerezhet tulajdonrészt a cégben egy amerikai vállalat, az USA-ban be fogják tiltani az alkalmazás használatát.
Bár egyelőre az sem világos, hogy Trumpnak joga van-e betiltani a TikTok használatát – amerikai vádak szerint az alkalmazás felhasználóival kapcsolatos adatok eljutnak a kínai titkosszolgálathoz – Pappas a felhasználóknak küldött videóüzenetben bejelentette: a vállalat arra számít, hogy a videómegosztó platform még jó ideig az USA-ban marad.
Közben több helyről megerősítették, hogy a Microsoft tárgyal a TikTok tulajdonosával, a ByteDance-szel arról, hogy az amerikai óriás részt vásárolna a TikTokban és átvenné az amerikai felhasználók adatainak a kezelését.

A TikTok a kínai ByteDance vállalatcsoport tulajdonában van, amely a platform Kínában működő, cenzúrázott verzióját, a Douyint is üzemelteti. Csaknem egymilliárd felhasználója van szerte a világon.
Az azzal összefüggő nemzetbiztonsági aggodalmak miatt, hogy a kínai hatóságok ellenőrzése alatt áll, a TikTok – amelyet Indiában már betiltottak – régóta bírálatok céltáblája az Egyesült Államokban.
