Egy brit lap értesülése szerint az amerikai Elon Musk, a Tesla és a SpaceX igazgatója jegyet vásárolt Richard Branson brit milliárdos űrjáratára.
Miközben Branson cége, a Virgin Galactic első, teljes személyzettel és utasokkal a világűr széléig tartó utazására készül vasárnap, a The Sunday Times értesülése szerint Musk, a rivális SpaceX űrvállalkozás feje megvásárolt magának egy helyet a Virgin egy jövőbeli útjára. Musk 10 ezer dollárt (majdnem 3 millió forint) helyezett letétbe, hogy lefoglaljon magának egy helyet, a járat indulásának dátumát azonban nem határozták meg. Branson a The Sunday Timesnak adott interjújában megerősítette a vásárlás tényét, hozzátéve, hogy talán viszonozza Musk gesztusát, és jegyet vesz a SpaceX egy jövőbeli járatára. „Elon a barátom, és egy napon talán és is utazom az egyik űrhajóján” – mondta. A milliárdoson űrversenye során a SpaceX rakéták tucatjait lőtte már fel, embereket is utaztatott, de Musk maga még nem űrhajózott. A SpaceX első, teljesen magán űrjárata ősszel indul. Richard Branson lesz az első, aki tulajdonos-űrhajósként vesz részt egy küldetésen, megelőzve az Amazon-alapító amerikai Jeff Bezost, aki kilenc nap múlva tervezi az űrutazást saját rakétáján, melyet a Blue Origin nevű cége épít. A Virgin Galactic űrturistái mintegy 250 ezer dollárért szállhatnak majd a fedélzetre, útjukon négy percig a súlytalanságba is belekóstolhatnak. Branson vasárnap Új-Mexikóból indul a világűr határára helyi idő szerint 8.30-kor (magyar idő szerint 16.30-kor), a startot a Virgin Galactic portálja élőben közvetíti.
