Az Egyesült Államok a jövőben Excalibur irányítható lövedékek szállítását tervezi Ukrajnának a 155 mm-es tüzérségi rendszerekhez – számolt be szombaton az rbc.ua hírportál a Politico című amerikai kiadványra hivatkozva.
A jelentés szerint a kiadványt tájékoztató informátor kijelentette, hogy az Egyesült Államok Excalibur típusú tarackból kilőhető irányított lövedékeket fog küldeni Ukrajnába, de ezek még nem részei a készülő katonai segélycsomagnak. Az Excalibur nagy pontosságú, megnövelt hatótávolságú lövedékek. A céltól való eltérés nem éri el a két métert. Mint a gyártó cég megjegyzi, egy ilyen lövedék átlagosan legalább tíz közönséges lövedéket helyettesíthet.
Az Excalibur olyan tüzérségi változatokkal kompatibilis, mint a brit M777 155 mm-es tarack, a svéd Archer 155 mm-es önjáró tarack és a német PzH 2000. Az inerciális irányítórendszer GPS-szel van kombinálva. A nagy pontosságnak köszönhetően a lövedékkel polgári épületek között elhelyezkedő célpontok is lőhetők, miközben a hagyományos, nem irányított tüzérségi lövedékek alkalmazása pedig a járulékos veszteségek magas kockázata miatt lehetetlen.
