Július 20-ra hirdette meg első űrutazását Jeff Bezos, az Amazon alapítójának cége, a Blue Origin. A 20 éve alapított űripari vállalat szerdán, Alan Shepard, az első amerikai űrhajós 60 évvel ezelőtti 15 percig tartó űrutazásának évfordulóján hirdetett árverést egy helyre első legénységgel tervezett űrutazására.
A New Shepard nevű rakéta indítását július 20-ra, az Apollo-11 Holdra szállásának napjára vették tervbe. Szerdától az interneten bárki licitálhat öt héten át, a győztes nevét június 12-én teszik közzé. A bevételt az űripari vállalat alapítványának adományozzák. A kereken tíz percre tervezett úton az űrhajó mintegy 100 kilométer magasra repíti legénységét, majd visszatér a Földre.
A New Shepard űrhajó hat megfigyelő ablakával, amely mintegy háromszor magasabb, mint egy Boeing-747-es repülőgép, hat embert képes szállítani, az űrkapszula a legnagyobb, amelyet valaha a világűrben használtak.

Az Amazon is beszállt az űrversenybe: úgy tűnik, hogy Jeff Bezos és Elon Musk az űrben csapnak össze a lakossági internetszolgáltatás területén.
Az Amazon ennek érdekében létrehozta a Kuiper nevű vállalatot, amely első számú célja a műholdak gyártása és pályára állítása lesz.
Jelenleg ezen a területen a SpaceX-hez köthető Starlink-projekt a piacvezető, Elon Musk vállalata a következő években már akár 40 ezer műholddal is rendelkezhet majd.
A műholdas internet segítségével azt ígérik, hogy sokkal nagyobb lesz a sávszélesség és olyan helyeken is elérhető lesz az internet, ahol korábban erre nem.
A Business Insider beszámolója alapján, az Amazon a tervek szerint 10 milliárd dollárt fog első körben befektetni szatellit-vállalkozásába.
