Ezrével mentik a Texast sújtó extrém hideg miatt megdermedt tengeri teknősöket a helyi polgárok. A hideg miatt veszélybe került hüllőket egy dél-texasi kongresszusi központba szállítják.
Az intézmény igazgatója elmondta, hogy folyamatosan érkeznek az autók és kisteherautók, van, aki egy-két teknőst hoz, de 80–100 teknőssel megpakolt utánfutók is érkeztek már.
Háztartások milliói maradtak víz nélkül az extrém hideg miatt
Az Egyesült Államokat, kifejezetten Texast, letaglózta a rendkívüli időjárási helyzet.
Sajnos nem mindegyik állat éli túl ezt a hideget, de igyekeznek annyit megmenteni közülük, amennyit csak lehet – idézte a The Guardian.
A Mexikói-öböl partvidékénél húzódó South Padre-szigeten lévő kongresszusi központ hétfőn nyitotta meg kapuját a teknősök előtt, amikor kiderült, hogy a szomszédságában működő, tengeri teknősök megmentésével foglalkozó Sea Turtle Inc. már nem tud több bajba került állatot elhelyezni, ráadásul a texasi áramkimaradás őket is érintette. Az áram- és vízszolgáltatás a kongresszusi központban is csak szerdán állt helyre.
Az elmúlt pár napban több mint 3500 tengeri teknőst szállítottak a központba az önkéntesek.
Mivel az előrejelzések szerint újabb hideghullám érkezik a térségbe, egyelőre nem tudják, hogy mikor lehet majd visszaengedni a hüllőket az óceánba.
Szerdán 4 Celsius-fok hideg volt a környéken, szombatra azonban, ha a hőmérséklet 15 fok fölé emelkedik, már elég meleg lehet a teknősök szabadon engedéséhez. Mióta az áramszolgáltatás helyreállt, a központban biztosítani tudják a 15 fok fölötti hőmérsékletet az állatoknak.

Egy texasi állategészségügyi létesítményben klónozott Przsevalszkij-csikó született – számolt be róla hétfőn a CNN online kiadása.
Először sikerült klónozni a vadonban már szinte teljesen kihalt faj egy példányát. A Przsevalszkij-lovak már negyven éve csaknem kizárólag állatkertekben élnek.
„A csikó születése megnövelte a veszélyeztetett vadon élő állatok genetikai megmentésének esélyeit. A fejlett szaporítási technológiák, beleértve a klónozást is, megmenthetik a fajt, lehetővé téve számunkra a genetikai sokféleség helyreállítását” – fogalmazott Ryan Phelan, a Revive & Restore természetvédelmi szervezet igazgatója. A szervezet biztosította a biotechnológiát a klónozáshoz, amelyben a San Diegó-i állatkert és a ViaGen Equine működött közre.
A klónozáshoz használt DNS-t 1980-ban fagyasztották le a San Diegó-i állatkertben.
A ló, amelynek DNS-ét a klónozáshoz használták 1975-ben született Nagy-Britanniában, és 1978-ban került az Egyesült Államokba, ahol 1998-ig élt.
Az augusztusban született csikó a Kurt nevet kapta Kurt Benirschke előtti tisztelgésül. A tudós indította azt az állatmegőrzési programot, amely a több ezer állatfaj sejtjeit és DNS-ét tároló Frozen Zoo (Fagyasztott állatkert) létrehozásához vezetett a San Diegó-i állatkertben. Kurt az állatkert szafariparkjába kerül majd, amikor már elég nagy lesz ahhoz, hogy szaporodjon.
Bob Wiese, az állatkert tudósa hangsúlyozta, hogy a csikó a faj genetikailag egyik legértékesebb egyede lehet. A vadlófaj Nyikolaj Przsevalszkij orosz tábornokról kapta a nevét, aki az 1880-as években készített leírást róla. Az ázsiai vagy mongol vadló, valamint takhi néven is emlegetett alfaj jellegzetessége, hogy sohasem háziasították. A vadlófaj megmentésére, amely a vadászat és a környezet károsodása miatt tűnt el szinte teljesen egyik eredeti élőhelyéről, a Dzsungáriai-medencéből, a kínai kormány a nyolcvanas években indított tenyésztési programot az alfaj Angliából és Németországból visszaszállított egyedeivel.
