Az utolsó ilyen jellegű küldetés 1976-ban volt, amelyet a Szovjetunió hajtott végre Luna–24 nevű holdszondájával. Amennyiben Kína sikerrel jár a misszió során, a harmadik olyan ország lesz az Egyesült Államok és a Szovjetunió után, amelynek sikerült mintát szerezni a Holdról.

1969. július 20-án az amerikai Apollo-program legénységének két tagja, Neil Armstrong és Edwin „Buzz” Aldrin elsőként lépett a Holdra. Fél évszázad elteltével újra kiújult a verseny a Hold meghódításáért, de ezúttal már nagyobb a tét.
Miközben az elmúlt néhány évben egyre többet lehetett arról hallani, hogy az ember a történelem során először egy másik égitest – a Hold, majd a Mars – felszínén építsen magának bázist, hogy ott éljen és kutasson, fontos szem előtt tartani az új környezet által jelentett veszélyeket, kihívásokat is. Nemcsak azért, mert oxigént vagy épp élelmet kell biztosítani a számukra, hanem azért is, mert igen magas sugárterhelésnek lesznek kitéve az asztronauták.
Míg a Föld mágneses mezeje a bolygónkon mindenki számára védelmet nyújt, a Holdon ez például nincs így. Egy nemzetközi kutatócsoport ezért nemrég nekiült, hogy kiszámolja, nagyjában mekkora sugárzást kell majd kivédeni a túlélés érdekében.
A Science Advanced című tudományos lapban megjelent publikáció szerint az asztronautákat naponta átlagosan 1,3 mSv (millisievert) ekvivalens sugárzási dózis éri majd. Ez 2,6-szor magasabb érték, mint ami a Nemzetközi Űrállomáson tartózkodókra hat.
Hogy ez az 1,3 mSv mekkora értéket jelent, azt érdemes kontextusba helyezni. Egy banán elfogyasztása például 0,1 mikrosievert egyszeri dózist jelent. A mikro és a milli között 10-3 a váltószám, vagyis a banán elfogyasztása 0,0001 mSv. Egy mellkasról készített CT-felvétel ezzel ellentétben már 6-18 mSv, de nem szabad elfelejteni, hogy az csupán egyetlen pillanat, nem pedig egy folyamatos kitettséget jelent.
A kifejezetten sugárzással foglalkozó szakembereknek évente legfeljebb 50 mSv lehet a kitettsége. A Holdon ezt az értéket 38 nap és 12 óra alatt érné el az ember.
Robert Wimmer-Schweingruber, a tanulmány egyik szerzője szerint a Holdon 200-szor nagyobb sugárzást kell elviselni, mint a Földön, de a Frankfurt–New York repülőjáraton ülőkhöz képest is 5-10-szer nagyobb a sugárzás a szomszédos égitesten. A szakemberek szerint mindez azt jelenti, hogy a rövid látogatás a Holdon alapvetően nem jelent problémát, egy hosszabb küldetés vagy akár az ottani élet már annál inkább. És mivel viszonylag sokáig érné őket ez az érték, ezzel igen komolyan számolni kell.
A megoldás az lehet, hogy ha a Hold felszíne alá építenék a bunkereket az űrhajósok, ám egyelőre nem tudni, ez mennyire árnyékolná le a sugárzást.
