Az utolsó ilyen jellegű küldetés 1976-ban volt, amelyet a Szovjetunió hajtott végre Luna–24 nevű holdszondájával. Amennyiben Kína sikerrel jár a misszió során, a harmadik olyan ország lesz az Egyesült Államok és a Szovjetunió után, amelynek sikerült mintát szerezni a Holdról.
