Washington államban május végén fél órán át repült az átalakított Cessna Caravan 208B, ami jelenleg a legnagyobb elektromos repülőgép. Az eredetileg kilenc utas szállítására alkalmas gép most csak a pilótával a fedélzeten emelkedett a levegőbe – írja a BBC.
Ugyan a mostani tesztrepülő még messze elmarad a több száz utast szállítani képes konstrukcióktól, az eCaravan mögött álló két társaság – az AeroTEC és a magniX – elégedett a tesztrepüléssel.
Roei Ganzarski, a magniX vezérigazgatója elmondta, hogy az elektromos repülőgép félórás repülési ideje mindössze hat dollárba került, míg hagyományos üzemanyag használatával ez minimum 300 dollár lett volna.
A szakértők szerint ugyan a tesztrepülés sikeres volt, még nem várható a közeljövőben, hogy e-repülők hatalmas távolságokat tegyenek meg, mivel az ehhez szükséges akkumulátorok súlya jóval nagyobb, mint a most használt üzemanyagoké. Ráadásul a jelenleg használt üzemanyagok tárolhatóak a repülőgépek szárnyaiban, míg az akkumulátoroknál ez így nem oldható meg.
„Az akkumulátorok súlya harmincszor nagyobb, mint a most használt üzemanyagoké”– nyilatkozta Duncan Walker, a Loughborough Egyetem oktatója. Példaként említette, hogy egy Airbus A380 ezer kilométert tudna megtenni akkumulátorokkal, míg üzemanyaggal 15 ezer kilométer megtételére képes.
