90 éves korában meghalt Desmond Tutu, dél-afrikai Nobel-békedíjas püspök, aki az apartheid elleni harc egyik szimbolikus alakja volt az országban.
Tutu 1984-ben kapta meg a Nobel-békedíjat az apartheiddel szembeni erőszakmentes ellenállásáért. A rezsimnek egy évtizeddel később lett vége, ekkoriban ő elnökölte az Igazság és Megbékélés Bizottságát, amelyet azért hoztak létre, hogy feltárja a fehér kisebbségi uralom idején történt atrocitásokat. Ő volt Johannesburg első fekete püspöke, később pedig Fokvárosban vezette az anglikán egyházat – írja halála kapcsán a Reuters.
A szókimondó Desmond Tutut sokan „nemzete lelkiismeretének” tartották, és népszerű alak volt mind a feketék, mind a fehérek körében. Korábban a fehér kisebbség zsarnoksága ellen prédikált, de az apartheid vége után is mindig egy igazságosabb Dél-Afrika eszméjét képviselte. A fekete politikai elitet éppolyan vehemenciával vonta felelősségre, mint a fehéreket.
Tutunál az 1990-es évek végén diagnosztizáltak prosztatarákot, és az elmúlt években többször is kórházba vonult, ahol a rákkezelésével összefüggő fertőzéseket kezelték. A halál okát egyelőre nem közölték, csak annyit, hogy a fokvárosi Oasis Frail otthonban, békésen távozott az élők sorából.
„Desmond Tutu nyugalmazott érsek halála egy újabb gyászos fejezet nemzetünk búcsújában kiváló dél-afrikaiak egy olyan nemzedékétől, akik egy felszabadult Dél-Afrikát hagytak ránk” – mondta Cyril Ramaphosa elnök. „Desmond Tutu egy hazafi volt, akinek nincs párja.”
