Az ENSZ Világélelmezési Programjának ítélt Nobel-békedíjat Rómában vehette át a kitüntetett szervezet vezetője.
„Köszönöm a norvég Nobel Bizottságnak ezt a hatalmas megtiszteltetést. Köszönöm, hogy elismeri az éhínség leküzdésére irányuló munkánkat, a nemzetek destabilizációjának enyhítése, a migráció megakadályozására, a konfliktusok megszüntetésére, a béke és stabilitás megteremtésére irányuló tevékenységünket” – fogalmazott David Beasly.
A Nobel Bizottság indoklása szerint a Világélelmezési Programnak (WFP) vezető szerepet játszik abban, hogy az éhséget ne lehessen háborús fegyverként használni és mindent megtesznek az éhínség elleni küzdelemben.
A szervezet 1963 óta működik az ENSZ és a FAO közös programjaként. Évente csaknem egymilliárd dollár értékű segély elosztását végzi, amelynek forrásait önkéntes (pénzbeli és természetbeni) kormányfelajánlások biztosítják.
