Az Európai Unió a héten bejelentette, hogy két saját közösségi szolgáltatást indított útjára. Az EU Voice és EU Video nevű platformok gyakorlatilag a Facebook és a YouTube funkcióit kínálják a felhasználók számára, de amerikai helyett teljes mértékben európai szervereken működnek.
Ennek ellenére a szolgáltatások nem saját fejlesztések: az EU Voice a Mastodon nevű nyílt forrású szoftveren alapul, míg az EU Video a torrent technológiát hasznosító PeerTube-ra épít működésében. Mindkettő egy decentralizált változatát képezi az ismert multinacionális cégek hasonló szolgáltatásainak, amik működése során ugyanakkor személyes adatok nem hagyják el az Európai Uniót, és azok reklámokat sem jelenítenek meg a profittermelés céljával.
Az új közösségi oldalakat az EU elsősorban nem az átlagpolgárok számára szánja, hanem az európai intézmények és szervezetek az amerikai szolgáltatásoktól és multiktól független, mégis egységes és közösségi interakcióra is lehetőséget adó kommunikációs felületének. Az ugyanakkor még kérdéses, hogy az emberek mit szólnak majd ehhez, és használják-e majd ezeket, vagy ezek megmaradnak egy kísérletnek az EU részéről.
