Az amerikai hadsereg kiírt egy közbeszerzést arra, hogy Romániában gépkarabélyokat vásároljon. Egészen konkrétan a szovjet Kalasnyikov fegyvercsaládba tartozó AK-74-eseket vennének, valamint ennek a megfelelőit, de ugyanígy érdekli őket Romániában gyártott PA md. 86-os és keletnémet MPi AK74-es is.
Ahogy az amerikaiak írták, elsősorban új gépkarabélyokat keresnek, de jó állapotban lévő, felújított fegyvereket is vennének.
Hivatalosan nem írják, hogy pontosan mire kellenének a fegyverek, de a Főtér által említett szakértők szerint „az orosz invázió ellen harcoló ukrán hadseregnek szánják őket, mivel – különösen a háború elején – olyan hiány volt kézifegyverekből, hogy második, sőt első világháborús darabokat is használtak.”
