A repülő alkalmatosságot június 17-én, a reggeli órákban szúrták ki Szendai felett.
Annyi biztos, hogy az objektum nem madár és nem repülő, leginkább egy meteorológiai ballonra hasonlít, a Japán Meteorológiai Hivatal ugyanakkor cáfolja, hogy az övék lenne.
Az objektum a földről nézve teljesen mozdulatlannak tűnt, és úgy látszott, hogy két propeller van rászerelve. Néhány óráig volt látható, aztán tovább haladt a Csendes-óceán felé.
A japán kabinetfőtitkár, Szuga Josihide is megerősítette, hogy a ballonszerű objektum nem az övék, ám arra nem tudott választ adni, honnan származik a furcsa gömb. Szuga kizárta, hogy idegen ország küldte volna a japán légtérbe.
Az objektum megjelenése az összeesküvéselmélet-hívők fantáziáját is beindította: egyesek azt feltételezik, a ballon észak-koreai propagandaanyagokat terjeszt, míg mások szerint az eszköz vírusrészecskéket enged a levegőbe.
