A mexikói külügyminisztérium nem kommentálta, miért nem engedték azonnal leszállni az amerikai gépet. Két nappal ezelőtt Mexikó megtagadta, hogy leszálljon egy amerikai katonai repülőgép, amely kitoloncolt illegális migránsokat szállított, számolt be az NBC News a Pentagon képviselőire és egy tájékozott forrásra hivatkozva január 25-én, szombaton.
Állításuk szerint két, Guatemalába tartó, egyenként körülbelül 80 embert szállító C-17-es katonai szállítógép hajtott végre deportálást az Egyesült Államok területéről január 23-án. De a harmadik, Mexikóba tervezett járat soha nem szállt fel.
A Fehér Ház szóvivője azt mondta az újságíróknak, hogy „a járatokkal kapcsolatos kérdés adminisztratív probléma volt, amelyet gyorsan megoldottak”. Ugyanakkor Caroline Levitt, a Fehér Ház sajtótitkára a tévécsatorna anyagának megjelenése után azt írta az X oldalán: „Tegnap Mexikó rekordszámú, négy deportálási járatot fogadott egy nap alatt!”

„Mexikó nagyon jó kapcsolatot ápol az Egyesült Államok kormányával, szuverenitásunkat tiszteletben tartva együttműködünk számos kérdésben, beleértve a migrációt is. Ha hazaszállításról van szó, mindig tárt karokkal várjuk a mexikóiak területünkre érkezését. Mexikó átöleli őket”, áll a közleményben.
Azt is közölték, hogy január 24-én Guatemalába három járat érkezett az Egyesült Államokból illegális bevándorlókkal, akiket visszavittek hazájukba, ez esetben 265 emberről volt szó.
