Trump, akit január 20-án iktatnak be hivatalába, a múlt héten „abszolút szükségszerűségnek” nevezte, hogy a Dániához tartozó félautonóm terület felett amerikai ellenőrzést szerezzenek, s nem zárt ki ennek érdekében katonai vagy gazdasági lépéseket, így például Dániát sújtó vámtarifák elrendelését sem.
A mostani beszélgetésben a dán miniszterelnök utalt a grönlandi kormányfő, Múte Bourup Egede korábbi nyilatkozataira, miszerint Grönland nem eladó – ismertette Frederiksen hivatala. „A miniszterelnök hangsúlyozta, hogy Grönlandon múlik, hogy saját függetlenségéről döntsön” – tette hozzá.
Frederiksen a beszélgetés során felhívta a figyelmet a biztonság növelésének szükségére a sarkvidéken, s arra is, hogy Dánia kész e tekintetben nagyobb felelősséget vállalni.
Szót ejtett arról is, hogy dán vállalatok hozzájárulnak az amerikai gazdasági növekedéshez és ottani munkalehetőségek biztosításához is. Hangsúlyozta, hogy az Európai Uniónak és az Egyesült Államoknak is érdeke a kölcsönös kereskedelem növelése.
A mintegy 57 ezres Grönland 600 éve Dánia része, 2009-ben azonban széles körű autonómiát kapott, és megkapta azt a jogot is, hogy kikiáltsa függetlenségét Dániától.
