Újabb kényelmetlenséggel kényszerülnek szembenézni a koronavírus miatt amúgy sem nyugodt amerikaiak: a The New York Times cikke szerint egy Kínából érkezett teherhajóval együtt jókora darazsak is partra szálltak korábban a nyugati parton, Washington államban. (Az, hogy a darazsak a hajóval együtt jöttek, nem bizonyított, de az igen, hogy a vespa mandarinia fajtáról van szó.)
A vespa mandarinia, másik nevén ázsiai óriás lódarázs az ázsiai rovarok egyik leghíresebbje, emellett a mérete is figyelemre méltó: a testhossza akár 5 centi is lehet, de a királynő ennél valamivel nagyobbra is megnőhet. A szakértők gyilkos óriásdarázsként hivatkoznak rá, mivel igen agresszív darázsféle, amely jellemzően csapatban támad. Íme egy közelebbi videó a faj egy példányáról:
A NYT által megszólaltatott kutató, a Kyoto Sangyo University munkatársa, Jun-icsi Takahasi azt mondta: az ázsiai lódarázs mérge önmagában nem halálos, ám ha valakit több szúrás ér, és pláne érzékeny az anyagra, a csípés halálos is lehet. A lódarázs a sima méheket sem kedveli, rendszerint megtámadja és legyilkolja őket. Az amerikai lap említi is cikkében, hogy Washington államban találtak olyan méhkasokat, amikben a betolakodók gyakorlatilag lefejezték az ott élő méheket.
Az óriásdarazsak tavaly december óta okoznak egyre nagyobb gondot a nyugati államban. A fészkeiket folyamatosan kutatják, hogy megsemmisíthessék azokat. A kutatók munkáját valamelyest segíti, hogy az ázsiai lódarazsak nyughelyén állítólag olyan meleg van, hogy hőkamerákkal messziről is ki lehet szúrni azokat. Így a felkutatásuk valamivel gyorsabb lehet.
