Kolumbusz Kristóf szobra helyére őslakos nőknek emelt emlékművet állítanak Mexikóváros központjában – közölte Claudia Sheinbaum, a mexikói főváros polgármestere.
A baloldali politikus az olasz felfedezőnek az amerikai kontinens gyarmati történetében játszott vitatott szerepével indokolta a döntést. Sheinbaum ugyanakkor elmondta, hogy Kolumbusz Kristóf szobra nem fog végképp eltűnni a városból, hanem egy kevésbé frekventált helyre a Polanco kerületben található Amerika-parkba helyezik át. Az őslakos nőknek emelt emlékmű az év végéig fog elkészülni és a Tlalli nevet fogja viselni, ami földet jelent az azték náhuatl nyelven.
A Kolumbusz-szobor 1877 óta ékesítette a Paseo de la Reforma sétányt. Az emlékművet már tavaly októberben eltávolították azzal az indoklással, hogy restaurálni fogják. Nem sokkal korábban baloldali szervezetek azzal fenyegettek, hogy október 12-én ledöntik talapzatáról. Az amerikai kontinens számos országában ezen a napon ünneplik Kolumbusz Kristóf érkezését 1492-ben az új világba.
Kolumbuszt Kristófot (1451–1506) emlegetik Amerika felfedezőjének. Ugyanakkor több bírálat is érte, mivel az őslakosokkal szembeni erőszak, illetve a transzatlanti rabszolgakereskedelem jelképének tekintik őt. A kolumbiai kormány egyébként júniusban jelentette be, hogy eltávolíttatta Kolumbusz Kristóf és I. Izabella kasztíliai királynő bronz emlékművét a főváros, Bogotá El Dorado nemzetközi repülőterének közeléből, miután az őslakosok megpróbálták ledönteni a szobrokat.
