A Phantaspis auritus csupán 4 centiméter hosszú volt, és egyelőre a tudósok is csak találgatnak, miért alakult ki olyan furcsán a feje.
Egy 500 millió évvel ezelőtt élt, furcsa külsejű trilobita, más néven háromkaréjú ősrák megkövesedett maradványait fedezték fel paleontológusok a kelet-kínai Santung tartományban.
A Kínai Tudományos Akadémia nankingi Geológiai és Paleontológiai Intézete szerint a Phantaspis auritus nevű, 4 centiméter hosszú trilobita sajátossága, hogy fejének elülső része egy pár nyúlfülre emlékeztető lebenyformában nyúlik előre.
A trilobiták vagy háromkaréjú ősrákok kihalt tengeri ízeltlábúak, amelyek nagyjából 520 millió évvel ezelőtt jelentek meg az óceánokban, és 250 millió évvel ezelőtt pusztultak ki.
„Először találkozunk ilyen furcsa külsejű trilobitával. A különös fejforma talán a természetes ellenségeinek elrettentésére szolgált vagy megkönnyítette a táplálékszerzést” – mondta Csao Fang-csen, az intézet munkatársa.
