Ingyenes látogatással és koncerttel ünneplik a pisai ferde torony 850. születésnapját. Harangzúgással kezdődik az ünneplés szerda délben, ahol 1173. augusztus 9-én helyezték el a története során elferdült, majd 2001-ben kiegyenesített torony alapkövét.
A városi katedrális harangtornyaként épített torony harangjait kongatják meg. Este fél tíztől megvilágítják a műemléket, a torony szomszédságában álló dómot és keresztelőkápolnát, melyek éjfélig ingyenesen látogathatók.
Ezzel egy időben a dóm előtti téren Ramin Bahrami iráni zongoraművész ad szintén ingyenes koncertet.
A világhírű ferde torony építése kétszáz évig tartott. Talajproblémák miatt 1178-ban megsüllyedt, majd építése többször szünetelt a Pisa és más itáliai városállamok közötti háborúk miatt. Utolsó emeletét 1372-ben fejezték be.
A folyamatosan ferdülő tornyot 1990-ben a látogatók elől lezárták, majd a Michele Jamiolkowski olasz mérnök vezette nemzetközi szakértői csapat vette kézbe az egyenesítését.
A csaknem 56 méter magas tornyot acélsodronyokkal biztosították, és a talapzat alatt elhelyezett súlyokkal megállították a dőlést.
A tornyot 44 centiméterrel tették egyenesebbé, majd 2001-ben nyitották meg újra. Michele Jamiolkowski idén júniusban hunyt el.
Roberto Cela, a pisai Dóm téren található műemlékek műszaki felelőse a Corriere della Sera napilapnak úgy nyilatkozott, hogy a 22 évvel ezelőtti beavatkozásnak köszönhetően a torony további háromszáz évig biztonságban áll.
A 2022-es adatok szerint tavaly 3,5 millióan látogatták meg a pisai ferde tornyot.
