Az űrkorszak kezdete óta első ízben próbáltak műholdakat földkörüli pályára állítani Nagy-Britannia területéről, a manőver azonban egyelőre nem részletezett meghibásodás miatt nem sikerült.
A kilenc műholdat Sir Richard Branson milliárdos brit nagyvállalkozó Virgin Group nevű vállalatbirodalmának műholdak felbocsátására szakosodott részlege, a Virgin Orbit indította a világűr felé kedd hajnalban.
Branson vállalata nem a hagyományos módszerrel, vagyis szárazföldi űrközpontokból, hanem egy, a célra átalakított egykori utasszállító repülőgép szárnya alól indítja a műholdakat szállító rakétáit.
Az ilyen jellegű felbocsátásokat a cég eddig Amerikában hajtotta végre. A Cosmic Girl nevű 21 éves Boeing 747-400-as repülőgép – amely korábban az ugyancsak Branson vállalatcsoportjához tartozó Virgin Atlantic légitársaság flottájának tagja volt – keddre virradó éjjel azonban a délnyugat-angliai Cornwall megye Newquay városának repülőteréről szállt fel a bal szárnyának tövében elhelyezett 25 tonnás rakétával.
A felszállásra kétezer ember gyűlt össze a repülőtér mellett, és a Boeing úját rekordszámú, a repülés egyes szakaszaiban csaknem negyedmillió érdeklődő kísérte figyelemmel világszerte a Flightradar24 online járatkövető alkalmazáson.
A gép nyugati irányban repült, amíg 35 ezer láb – 10 900 méter – magasságban el nem érte az Ír Köztársaság délnyugati partjainak közelében kijelölt indítási zónát.
Ezt az övezetet a brit, az ír, a francia és a spanyol légügyi hatóságok már az indítás előtt közös felügyelet alá vonták és lezárták a polgári légiforgalom elől.
A LauncherOne nevű rakétát a Boeing ebből a térségből indította a világűr felé.
A kidolgozott pályaterv alapján a rakéta 555 kilométeres magasságban kezdte volna pályára állítani a kilenc műholdat.
A Virgin Orbit azonban a Twitteren kedd hajnalban közzétett – érdemi részleteket nem tartalmazó – tájékoztatásában közölte: a jelek szerint valamilyen anomália megakadályozta a földkörüli pálya elérését.
A cég hozzátette, hogy tanulmányozza a beérkező információkat.
A repülőgép, amely a rakétát az indítási zónába szállította, időközben biztonságban leszállt ugyanazon a délnyugat-angliai repülőtéren, ahonnan indult.
A Virgin Orbit első felbocsátása 2020 májusában szintén kudarccal végződött, a következő négy azonban sikeres volt.
