Roman Abramovics tavaly áprilisban kapta meg a portugál állampolgárságot a közjegyzői és nyilvántartási intézettől. A Chelsea labdarúgóklub tulajdonosa annak alapján vehette fel a portugál állampolgárságot, hogy egy 2013-ban elfogadott törvény szerint az állampolgárság megilleti a XV. században az ország területéről elűzött szefárd zsidók leszármazottjait.
Porto városának zsidó közössége állított ki korábban igazolást arról, hogy Abramovics valóban rendelkezik a jogszabályban meghatározott felmenőkkel.
Daniel Litvak rabbi a sajtónak úgy nyilatkozott, hogy a most indított ügyészségi vizsgálat várhatóan cáfolja az üggyel kapcsolatos alaptalan elméleteket, amelyek szerint Abramovics ügyében a portugál hatóságok kivételeztek volna.
