Helyi idő szerint szerda reggel partra emelték a szerencsétlenül járt Titan merülőhajó roncsait – számolt be a kanadai közszolgálati sajtó honlapja. A Horizon Arctic nevű hajó az újfundlandi St. Johnban kötött ki, ott, ahonnan a Titan és a fedélzetén meghalt öt utas is elindult.
A roncsokat az Odysseus nevű, távolról vezérelhető robot hozta felszínre és a mentőalakulatok 10 napon keresztül éjjel-nappal dolgoztak. A roncsokat, köztük a búvárhajó orrát és az oldalának egy részét a gyártó OceanGate logójával, a kanadai parti őrség telephelyére szállították.
A Titan június 18-án indult el a 4000 méter mélyen fekvő Titanic roncsaihoz, ám az indulás után másfél órával megszakadt a kapcsolat a búvárhajóval. A feltételezések szerint a hajó a nagy nyomás következtében összeroppant. A fedélzeten tartózkodott többek között az OceanGate vezérigazgatója, Stockton Rush és egy Titanic-szakértő is.

Meghaltak a Titanic közelében eltűnt Titán merülőhajó utasai – közölte csütörtökön este az OceanGate üzemeltető vállalat.
Sajnálattal úgy gondoljuk mostanra, hogy vezérigazgatónk, Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood és fia, Suleman Dawood, valamint Paul-Henri Nargeolet, odavesztek. Ezek a férfiak igazi felfedezők voltak, akik különleges kalandszellemmel és a világ óceánjainak felfedezésére és védelmére irányuló mély elhivatottsággal rendelkeztek

Az OceanGate egyben részvétét nyilvánította a hozzátartozóknak, egyben köszönetet mondott a kereső akcióban résztvevőknek erőfeszítéseikért.
John Mauger, az amerikai parti őrség ellentengernagya sajtótájékoztatóján megerősítette, hogy a búvárhajó kapitánya és négy utasa halott. A roncsokat egy kanadai hajóról távvezérelt víz alatti robot segítségével találták meg csütörtök reggel 488 méterre a Titanic roncsának orrától mintegy 4 kilométeres mélységben. Mint mondta, a törmelékmező arra utal, hogy a nyomáskamra összeroppant.
Az amerikai parti őrség közölte, hogy folytatják a tengerfenék átkutatását a Titanic közelében további nyomokat gyűjtve, hogy kiderítsék, mi történhetett a Titánnal.
Ezen felül erőfeszítéseket tesznek annak érdekében, hogy felszínre hozzák a merülőhajó roncsait, illetve utasainak földi maradványait. Ezen munkálatok főleg távvezérelt robotokkal zajlanak.
„Rendkívül kíméletlen viszonyok uralkodnak ott lent a tengerfenéken” – hangsúlyozta Mauger.
A turisztikai célokra használt búvárhajó vasárnap indult útnak öt emberrel a fedélzetén eredetileg kevesebb mint félnaposra tervezett útjára a Titanic roncsaihoz. A Titán eltűnését követően nagyszabású kutató-mentő akció indult az Atlanti-óceán mintegy 10 ezer négyzetmérföldes területén.

A második világháborúban tengeralattjáró által elsüllyesztett tengeralattjáró roncsát találták meg görög búvárok az Égei-tengerben.
A Jantina nevű olasz tengeralattjáró a görögországi Lérosz szigetéről indult útnak, amikor a szövetségesek egy tengeralattjárója, a birt HMS Torbay torpedókkal elsüllyesztette.
A búvárhajóval együtt 48 matróz veszett a tengerbe az 1941. július 5-i támadásban.
Az olasz tengeralattjáró roncsát Görögország egyik leghíresebb búvárja, Kosztasz Thoktaridesz és csapata találta meg Míkonosz szigetétől délre 103 méteres mélységben a ROV Super Achilles nevű távirányítású búváreszközzel, amely részletekbe menő felvételeket készített róla. A múlt hónapban megtalált hajót olasz hadtörténeti feljegyzések segítségével azonosították.
A tengeralattjárók közti konfrontáció ritka haditengerészeti esemény – kommentálta a felfedezés jelentőségét Thoktaridesz.
Ez már a negyedik tengeralattjáró-roncs, amelyet az ismert búvár lokalizált és azonosított a tenger mélyén.
