A Microsoft indoklása szerint emberi hiba miatt blokkolta a Bing keresőprogramjuk a „tank man” kifejezés találatait az 1989-es pekingi pártállami vérengzés évfordulóján négy országban – írja a Guardian. A kifejezést ideiglenesen az Egyesült Államokban, Németországban, Szingapúrban és Franciaországban tiltották le.
A cenzúra miatt így ezekben az országokban sem voltak kereshetők az 1989-es Tienanmen téri vérengzésről készült videók és fotók arról, hogy egy férfi az eset másnapján odaállt a távozni készülő harckocsik elé az úton, és percekig nem engedte őket továbbhaladni, majd fel is mászott az egyikre.
A Microsoft Bing azon kevés keresők közé tartozik, ami vállalta az együttműködést a kínai állammal annak érdekében, hogy őket ne tiltsák be az országban, valószínűleg véletlenül kezdték cenzúrázni az ezt nem igénylő országok kereséseit is.
A Tienanmen téri vérengzés 1989. június 3-4-én zajlott, amikor az állam a Peking központjában a demokráciáért akkor már másfél hónapja tartó tüntetését fojtotta vérbe tankokkal, ejtőernyősökkel és gépfegyverekkel. Kína azóta sem ismeri el a vérengzést.
