A SpaceX rakétaindító állomása és központja körüli közösség lakói 212:6 arányban szavaztak a város önállósodása mellett és megválasztották a város első tisztviselőit is, akik mind a SpaceX jelenlegi vagy korábbi alkalmazottai.
Az 1,45 négyzetmérföldes terület lakosainak szinte mindegyike Musk alkalmazottja, vagy azok családtagja. A Boca Chica néven ismert területet a SpaceX nagy teljesítményű Starship rakétájának fejlesztési központjává vált.
A vállalat tisztviselői szerint a cég azonban nem tud elegendő lakhatást biztosítani a központ közelében élni kívánó több száz munkavállalónak. A megye nemrég elutasította a további sorházak építésére irányuló kísérletet. Jelenleg körülbelül 260 SpaceX-alkalmazott él a Texas déli csücskén található enklávéban a további 3100 munkavállaló pedig ingázik a környező településekről.
