A Virgin Galactic megkezdi a jegyek értékesítését az űrturisták számára, mindössze néhány héttel azt követően, hogy a cég alapítója, Richard Branson maga is rövid utazást tett a világűr peremére. Az is kiderült tehát, hogy mennyit kell fizetniük a jövőbeni űrturistáknak.
Néhány héttel Richard Branson rövid űrutazása után, meghirdette a jegyeket az űrturisták számára a Virgin Galactic. A vállalat közlése szerint az árak 450 000 dollártól (kb. 12 141 000 hrivnya) indulnak – írja a The Guardian.
A vállalat közlése szerint egyéni helyekért is lehet fizetni, de csomagokat is értékesítenek – vagyis akár egy vásárló is lefoglalhat egy teljes űrhajót. Az első körben azonban csak a korai jelentkezők juthatnak hozzá jegyekhez. Hozzátették, a terv szerint jövőre már el fognak kezdeni bevételt generálni a jegyeladásokból.
Az űrturizmussal foglalkozó Virgin Galactic számára mérföldkő volt, amikor az alapító Branson július 11-én 88 kilométeres magasságba emelkedett a cég űrhajójával, majd visszatért a jármű első, teljes legénységgel végrehajtott tesztrepüléséről.
A Virgin Galactic egyébként júniusban kapta meg a hatósági engedélyeket ahhoz, hogy embereket küldhessen a világűrbe.
A vállalat következő űrrepülését szeptemberre tervezik, Új-Mexikóban. A Virgin Galactic a friss bejelentés mellett a második negyedéves pénzügyi eredményeit is közzétette. Ebből az derült ki, hogy Branson cége 94 millió dolláros veszteséget generált, a növekvő költségek miatt. Külön érdekesség, hogy a társaság mindössze 570 000 dolláros bevételt produkált, ami éppen csak elég lenne egy űrrepülőjegyre.

Miközben Branson cége, a Virgin Galactic első, teljes személyzettel és utasokkal a világűr széléig tartó utazására készül vasárnap, a The Sunday Times értesülése szerint Musk, a rivális SpaceX űrvállalkozás feje megvásárolt magának egy helyet a Virgin egy jövőbeli útjára.
Musk 10 ezer dollárt (majdnem 3 millió forint) helyezett letétbe, hogy lefoglaljon magának egy helyet, a járat indulásának dátumát azonban nem határozták meg.
Branson a The Sunday Timesnak adott interjújában megerősítette a vásárlás tényét, hozzátéve, hogy talán viszonozza Musk gesztusát, és jegyet vesz a SpaceX egy jövőbeli járatára.
„Elon a barátom, és egy napon talán és is utazom az egyik űrhajóján” – mondta.
A milliárdoson űrversenye során a SpaceX rakéták tucatjait lőtte már fel, embereket is utaztatott, de Musk maga még nem űrhajózott. A SpaceX első, teljesen magán űrjárata ősszel indul.
Richard Branson lesz az első, aki tulajdonos-űrhajósként vesz részt egy küldetésen, megelőzve az Amazon-alapító amerikai Jeff Bezost, aki kilenc nap múlva tervezi az űrutazást saját rakétáján, melyet a Blue Origin nevű cége épít.
A Virgin Galactic űrturistái mintegy 250 ezer dollárért szállhatnak majd a fedélzetre, útjukon négy percig a súlytalanságba is belekóstolhatnak.
Branson vasárnap Új-Mexikóból indul a világűr határára helyi idő szerint 8.30-kor (magyar idő szerint 16.30-kor), a startot a Virgin Galactic portálja élőben közvetíti.

Összesen tizenkilenc utas fér majd abba az újfajta, szuperszonikus repülőbe, amelyet a Virgin Galactic szeretne megépíteni; a társaság már meg is osztotta az első látványterveket a futurisztikus utasszállítóról, amelynek elkészítésébe a Rolls-Royce hajtóműgyártó is besegít.
A repülőgép 18 ezres utazómagasságon a hangsebesség háromszorosával (Mach 3) lesz képes repülni, és épp ez jelenti a munka egyik legnehezebb részét: a Virginnek olyan szerkezetet kell ugyanis építenie, amely képes elviselni a nagy sebesség miatt keletkező hatalmas hőt.
A Virgin Galactic ezért a Concorde különleges hajtóművével már sok tapasztalatot gyűjtő Rolls-Royce-t is bevonta a munkába. De nem csak a burkolat elkészítése hatalmas kihívás: a gépnek ugyanúgy rendelkeznie kell majd a Szövetségi Légügyi Hivatal (FAA) jóváhagyásával.
