Az állatok a tibeti gyapjas repülőmókus (Eupetaurus tibetensis) és a jünnani gyapjas repülőmókus (Eupetaurus nivamons) nevet kapták. (Az utóbbi faj egyede látható cikkünk nyitóképén.)
A világ legritkább és legkevésbé tanulmányozott emlőseinek egyike a gyapjas repülőmókus (Eupetaurus cinereus) a Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society című folyóiratban publikált tanulmány szerint.
A Kínai Tudományos Akadémiához tartozó Kunmingi Állattani Intézet munkatársa, a tanulmány egyik szerzője, Li Csüan szerint az állat jelenleg veszélyeztetettként szerepel a Természetvédelmi Világszövetség (IUCN) fenyegetett fajokat felvonultató vörös listáján. Egyedszámát ezer és 3 ezer közé becsülik.
A kutatók szerint a két faj felfedezése a Himalája és a Hengtuan-hegység térségének gazdag biológiai sokféleségét jelzi.
